The Charterhouse, Charterhouse Square, London EC1M 6AN
Despite its central location between Smithfield Market and St Barts Hospital, Charterhouse sits in leafy seclusion and its quadrangles have the atmosphere of an Oxbridge college. It began life as a Carthusian monastery in 1371, and after the Reformation it was a Tudor mansion, a Jacobean 'hospital', and school premises. Today it is home to 40 senior citizens known as 'The Brothers'.

Something of its fascinating history may be gleaned here:

We will sing in the Great Chamber. It is a large, stately room with wooden floor and ornate plaster ceiling overlooking quiet gardens.
